the modules are not and are all being fed stray voltage right back to where they are grounded on the equipment you are welding on. I have a battery isolator for everything else says to unplug all modules, and has pictures of where all 30 of them are, so I just hit the battery disconnect! The skid loader was a miller 250 and the planter monitor was a brand new snap-on wire welder. I also burned up a alternator on a case 85xt skid loader welding a spear on the loader. I am not saying that unhooking a battery will do anything, but I have an agleader bill that that says a welder will destroy precision equiptment. We stood there and joked that if we see the lights flashing we are in trouble. I was welding on the lift assist of the planter keeping the ground as close as we could. $1200 and about 3 weeks away from the display I was back going. I never used to unhook batteries just welded and hoped for the best. I just advise that everyone takes all the precautions they can when welding on equiptment with todays new technologies. Last one we welded on was a Deere 9750 and had no problems after. We've welded brackets and such on almost every combine we've had, never have unhooked the battery, just make sure the machine is off, and ground clamped tight. The main thing to insure was that the ground cable was as close as possible to the weld site. He said he was told by an instructor in school that disconnecting the battery wasn't important. I asked one of the Case/IH mechanics the same question. I'm not sure it helps protect anything.I know others will disagree with me but all you would be protecting is the battery since the computers and alternator and everything else is still hooked up and the battery would not. I unhook the ground cable whenever I weld on something that has sensitive equipment. When welding on a combine, does anyone disconnect the ground battery cable? Or maybe it is better to disconnect the positive cable, What is the best way to protect the computer boards?
